Decoration in exterior is a terrific way to give a “fresh air” to your home. The function of the paint is not only decorate but also protect against the weather (sometimes strong), taking care of your property and increasing its value if you decide to sell it.
Before starting, follow these simple steps to adequate your home before painting. These steps, without doubt, make easy your work, allow you to save money and will improve the final finish.

 


most of the times, you will require a ladder. Make sure the ladder you use is in good conditions. Avoid accidents. 
Do not use electrical devices outdoors when it is raining or when the environment or the surfaces in which you are going to work are wet. You can use tape to protect and keep plug the electrical connections and then avoid the devices unplugged while they are in use.

If you use a heat gun to remove old, flaked paint, make sure you use it far from solvent, fresh paint or paint cans (especially if you are using solvent base paints).  See the section Products in order to know safety and handle conditions. 

Solvent base paints have high contents of organic solvent. Check if the paint you use is water base or solvent base (see the section Products). If you are using solvent base paints, avoid breathing its vapors. Use appropriate personal protection equipment.

 

Some additional tips: 

make sure you have all the equipment and tools you need on hand. It is useful to carry out your work and save you time.

for application in exteriors, make sure you are using the correct type of paint (see the section Products) and then provide the protection your house requires

Never paint when it is raining. Allow a drying time of at least 2 to 3 days after the rain. This time ensures the surface is dry. Nevertheless, make sure the surface is completely dry before painting

Never paint under direct sunlight. Paint the south and west sides in the morning and the north and east sides in the afternoon. It is more comfortable and this technique avoids the paint dries quickly and then prevents no leveling effects.

Nylon or polyester bristle brushes work better with water base paints (see the section Products).  Natural bristles brushes work better with solvent base paints (see the section Products). Check the brushes and rollers are in good condition before painting.

always follow the indications related with retouch time. These indications are in the label of the product (or see our section Products).  In general, let the paint to dry at least 8 hours (or overnight) after the first layer is applied.
